College Programs
Campus Sexual Violence & The Importance of Self-Defense Training
Recent surveys of college students have found that between 20% and 25% of women experience sexual assault while on campus.
Research also shows that self-defense is one of the most promising strategies to make students and campuses safer.
- A University of Oregon study found that women who took self-defense were less than half as likely to experience sexual violence as women with no such training.
- A large Canadian study found that women randomly assigned to a self-defense class were half as likely to experience rape as women with no such training.
Like IMPACT, the self-defense programs that produce these results are trauma-informed, and clearly place the responsibility for sexual violence on those who perpetrate. Effective programs also teach skills that are relevant to sexual violence perpetrated by people we know.
IMPACT programs offer a range of verbal and physical skills that are relevant to sexual and other types of violence students face.
